Fatigue Analysis of a Cylinder Head Bolt on a Suzuki Motorcycle
Situation: Evaluate the structural integrity
and fatigue life of the brake rotor bolt on a suzuki motorcycle
Task: Use concepts from mechanics of materials
and verify the results with numerical simulation software.
Action: Applied fatigue models, FEA analysis,
and rebuilt parts in Solidworks.
Result: Presented the results in front of
academic and industry professional, receiving the top grade
in the class on the project.
Shows the free body diagram and resulting stresses acting
on the bolt.
×
Shows the superposition of stresses and the resulting stress
element in the shank at the worst case stress condition.
×
Mohr’s circle for the worst case stress along the shank.
×
Shows the alternating stress diagram under the current loading
conditions
×
Compares S-N curves between a standard Moore tensile test
and the empirically derived S-N curve that includes fatigue factors
×
Shows a variety of different empirical fatigue lines (e.g. Soderberg
Goodman, Gunn, Gerber, ect.) and the operating point.
×
Shows the definition of the safety factor applied to the Gunn Model.
×
Shows the calculated safety factors under the current operating
conditions for each fatigue model.
×
Shows the stress distribution on the bolt and the locations
of the max and min stresses using SOLIDWORKS software. Note:
the resulting max stress is almost identical to the theoretical
calculations.
